This is USGS Circular 998,United States Geological Survey Alaska Program, 1986
Published in 1987, this great
195-page
book contains more than thirty articles on Alaska geology based on results from the 1986 USGS research season. This book is all geology, with articles on numerous topics, including numerous
gold and platinum
deposits. It all makes for interesting reading and would make a great addition to any library on the geology of Alaska. Articles of especial interest include:
PLATINUM-Group Element Concentrations in a Biotite-Rich Clinopyroxenite suite, Eagle C-3 Quadrangle, Alaska
Sources of Placer GOLD in the Southern Part of the White Mountains Recreation Area, East-Central Alaska
Placer GOLD Related to Mafic Schist in the Circle District, Alaska
Structural Fabric Analysis of the Perseverance Slate and GOLD-Bearing Quartz Veins in the South Ore Body of the Alaska-Juneau Lode System, Southeastern Alaska
Ultramafic and Mafic Sills in the Vicinity of the Treadwell GOLD Deposits, Douglas Island, Southeastern Alaska
Newly Discovered Molybdenite Occurrence Near Boundary Creek, Coats Mountains, Southeastern Alaska
Salt Chuck PALLADIUM-Bearing Ultramafic Body, Prince of Wales Island
The Alaska-Juneau GOLD Deposit; Remobilized Syngenetic Versus Exotic Epigenetic Origin
The 1986 Eruptions of Augustine Volcano, Alaska
Ordovician and Silurian Fossils from the Doonerak Anticlinorium, Central Brooks Range, Alaska
Plant Megafossils, Vertebrate Remains, and Paleoclimate of the Kogosukruk Tongue, (late Cretaceous), North Slope, Alaska
And MUCH MORE!
What a great book! There’s something here for everyone. Most of these articles are not scientific overloads of obscure mumbo jumbo, but rather very readable accounts of the geology and mineral deposits. Another interesting aspect of these articles is that they provide a glimpse of many different geologic research methods as well as good overview of some of the geology of Alaska.
